Russell Kennedy has over 20 years experience as a trusted advisor to government clients. We offer the understanding and capability to meet the external legal service needs of government by providing considered advice to support well-developed and defensible decisions.

In working with government, Russell Kennedy has developed a unique understanding of its operations and requirements in the deployment of government law. We assist all levels of government by meeting specific legal needs within the context of unique operating environments, regularly advising on administrative and public law issues including public administration and governance, statutory interpretation, judicial and merits review, policy and legislative reform, freedom of information, privacy, probity, and Royal Commission and Ombudsman inquiry processes.

Russell Kennedy acts for Victorian departments providing advice on statutory interpretation, drafting and policy matters. We also regularly assist government clients to understand the impact of new or amended legislation on their operations, as well as helping them meet their statutory obligations.

Russell Kennedy understands the issues facing those who are tasked with making administrative decisions and how best to assist those decision makers in discharging their duties.

Russell Kennedy has experience in advising and assisting agencies in relation to their obligations under freedom of information legislation. Often these requests relate to projects that involve high levels of public scrutiny and/or are of a politically sensitive nature.

Russell Kennedy has also advised and acted for government clients in a range of complex corporate and commercial law matters. Members of the Russell Kennedy team frequently provide advice to local, state and commonwealth governments and authorities in respect of commercial matters as part of undertaking commercial transactions, advising in relation to contracts and procurement, and information technology and intellectual property matters.  We are on the Victorian Government specialist panel for Intellectual Property and Information Technology.

We also have extensive government property, planning and water experience including advising on leasing and licensing including development leases, compliance and advice and dispute resolution.  We have also advised numerous Victorian State Government departments on sale and purchase transactions including preparing and advising on contracts of sale and statutory disclosures, undertaking purchaser due diligence, negotiating contract terms.  Our firm also has extensive compulsory acquisition expertise including advising as to the statutory processes, negotiating agreements with landowners and disputes.  Russell Kennedy is on the Victorian Government specialist panel for Property.

Russell Kennedy provides a broad range of litigation and dispute resolution legal services to clients in local, state and commonwealth government.
