Aged Care Seminar: Understanding & Dealing With Changes to Medical Treatment Laws

The recent introduction of the Medical Treatment Planning and Decisions Act 2016 on 12 March 2018 has resulted in sweeping changes to advance care planning and substitute decision making.

Aged care providers in Victoria, in both home and residential care, will need to understand and comply with these new laws.  This seminar is designed to assist aged care providers understand their obligations.

Issues that we will cover in this session include:

  1. What are advance care directives?
  2. Which staff will be covered?
  3. What does my organisation do in a medical emergency?
  4. What’s a medical treatment decision-maker?
  5. How does the introduction of medical treatment decision-makers affect guardians and medical power of attorneys?
  6. Practically, what steps should Victorian aged care providers take to minimise risk?
