On 4 September 2023, the Government introduced the Fair Work Legislation Amendment (Closing Loopholes) Bill 2023 into Parliament. While the objective is to ‘close loopholes’, the proposed workplace law reforms are complex with potentially far-reaching implications. Please see our recent Alert which addresses key aspects of these reforms.

The Senate has delayed their reporting date on the Bill to 1 February 2024. As the Bill faces Senate Committee inquiry, this is a good time for businesses to start turning their minds to the potential impact on their organisations and current workforce arrangements, and to take steps to prepare for these reforms before they become law.

We will address the following in the webinar:

  • New statutory definition of ‘casual employee’
  • Casual conversion rules and related changes
  • New statutory definition of ‘employee’ and ‘employer’ and impact on the contractor/employee dichotomy
  • Reforms affecting gig economy and road transport workers
  • Reforms targeting labour hire arrangements
  • Wage theft and new criminal offence
  • New protection against domestic violence discrimination
  • New industrial manslaughter provisions

In covering these topics, our focus will be on what employers need to consider and do to prepare for these changes.

The presenters will be Anthony Massaro, Principal, and Mandi Xu, Special Counsel, in Russell Kennedy’s Workplace Employment and Safety team.
